Post-Impressionism

Post-Impressionism is less a movement than a generation of painters who had absorbed Impressionism and then pushed against it — Van Gogh, Cézanne, Gauguin, Seurat. They kept the bright unmixed colour and abandoned the rest: instead of recording an optical impression they used colour and distorted form to carry emotion and structure. Van Gogh’s thick directional impasto is the clearest case, and the hardest to reproduce, which is why our Post-Impressionist canvases are built up in relief by hand rather than smoothed flat.
