Renaissance

The Renaissance gave European painting the tools it used for the next four hundred years: linear perspective, anatomy studied from life, and oil paint — a medium slow enough to be worked in transparent layers. Leonardo took that last property further than anyone, modelling faces in dozens of near-invisible glazes with no drawn line at all, a technique called sfumato. Renaissance reproduction is therefore a question of patience rather than speed: the layers have to be built and left to cure.
