Impressionism

Impressionism began as an insult. When Monet, Renoir, Degas and Pissarro exhibited independently in Paris in 1874, a critic seized on the title of one Monet canvas — Impression, Sunrise — and used it to mock the whole group for showing sketches instead of finished paintings. The name stuck, and the method it described changed European painting: work outdoors, paint the light rather than the object, leave the brushstroke visible. Our Impressionist reproductions are painted in oils on linen by fine-art trained artists, in the same broken, unblended strokes the originals depend on.
