Art Nouveau swept Europe between roughly 1890 and 1910, refusing the distinction between fine art and decoration: the same whiplash curves and stylised natural forms ran through painting, glass, ironwork, jewellery and architecture. In Vienna the movement took its own path as the Secession, led by Gustav Klimt, who worked gold leaf directly into his canvases after seeing Byzantine mosaics at Ravenna. Reproducing this work is ornamental labour as much as painting — every motif is placed by hand.
